SmartWords is an iPhone/iPad app to learn words and letters, by the programming company OrangeMico. I created the illustrations and the interface design. From OM’s web site:
SmartWords English is a fun, beautifully illustrated app for kids to learn their first words. Gameplay includes both visual and audio elements as well as interactive touch and shake features. With today’s competitive, global economy, there’s more emphasis for children to get a head start and learn languages for use both at home and abroad. That is why we are working on releasing multilingual features in an upcoming version.
When designing the interface, we wanted to make sure that it would be very easy for a very young child to use it. We considered many ways of navigating between the different fruits and veggies. The most fun is just shaking the iPad like a rattle, but the parent can also use straightforward “Next/Previous” buttons and click directly additional fruits shown on the bottom.
his learning activity is not so simple! The child is learning the names of fruits, what the fruits look like, and what the words look like. To foster familiarity with the letter form, the fruits can be navigated using just letters.
